Product Description

Forewords by Ron Howard (Director of 'Apollo 13') and Clint Howard (who played Sy in the movie). Includes CD-ROM: 4 Hours of tape loops from Apollos 13 and 15. Most of what we learn about NASA's space missions comes from statements carefully planned and massaged by managers and public relations people. With Apollo EECOM: Journey of a Lifetime we finally get an insider's view of how the Flight Controllers operated and just what they faced when events were crucial. This book is the life story of Sy Liebergot, former NASA Flight Controller, with emphasis on his years working in Mission Control. Following the disastrous tank explosion during the Apollo 13 mission, it was the Flight Controllers that made possible the safe return of the three endangered astronauts. Aboard Apollo 13, Lovell, Haise and Swigert performed wonders battling for their lives, but without the expertise, quick thinking and technical support of Mission Control, they never could have come home. Sy Liebergot was there and relates the details as they really happened. And Apollo 13 is just one of the many exciting stories he tells us. Truly an insider's view, this book discusses not just the events, but also the people that decided and enacted those events. These are the details that were never shown on anyone's TV screen; finally we get to learn what type of people the NASA Mission Controllers really were, and how they handled the demanding tasks that were theirs alone.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing, 8 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Well this an autobiography but the first half is a depressing read about his sad childhood and life up to joining Mission control. The sections about Mission Control seem to be thin on words with much of the detail already covered elsewhere in Apollo 13 or Andrew Chaikins book A man on the moon. Pictures on the enclosed CD seem to be mainly of the flight controllers having a booze up. The video of Sy talking in the MOCR (Mission Operations Control Room) has a poor sound track so is hard to follow.
So what is good? ... well the MOCR layout and pictures are interesting as are the screen shots of the EECOM status screens. The Apollo 13 EECOM sound tracks are interesting too. Should you buy this? On balance yes, just - but if weighing this up against something else buy Virtual Apollo instead.

3.0 out of 5 stars An original viewpoint, 26 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Sy Liebergot's autobiography is split into three parts: his early years, his time in Mission Control and his life since he hung up the EECOM headset.

Many will buy this for the middle section and he does offer an angle on the Apollo missions which isn't easily found elsewhere. The biographies of Flight Directors Gene Kranz and Chris Kraft describe Mission Control in depth but Liebergot describes what it was like to be on the receiving end of their requests for decisions.

The near-disaster of Apollo 13 gets fourteen interesting pages and although the facts show the critical role Liebergot played in recovery, he is quick to acknowledge others' equally important contributions.

Later missions in which he was away from the console are covered very briefly, but there is good coverage of Skylab and the Apollo-Soyuz Test Program, not least the latter's entertaining 'cultural exchange' visits to Moscow.

The sections of the book which deal with his personal life won't be everyone's cup of tea but they're not overly long.

The included CD-ROM has several hours of interesting audio recordings of the Mission Control loop during the critical stages of Apollo 13, some recordings made during Apollo 15, various photos and a dreadful quality video of Sy delivering a lecture to a student class.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential Apollo book, 14 Oct 2003
By Dr. Eric M. Jones (Wodonga, Victoria, Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There are a handful of books that are essential to understanding of how the successes of Apollo were achieved and about the people who made it happen. This is one of those books. "Apollo EECOM" is far more personal than most and is an easy, engrossing read. Above all, I appreciate Liebergot's honesty. Highly Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story
I liked the book too. True, the chapters about his early life was a bit long but they helped to understand what shaped this man. Read more
