Product Description

Product Description
From their early years with Peter Gabriel to their run of chart hits fronted by Phil Collins, and beyond, Genesis have carved out an important place in music history. The group amazed fans and critics as they progressed from tiny clubs and 10-minute epic songs like 'The Musical Box', to sold out stadiums and pop hits like 'Invisible Touch' and 'I Can't Dance'. This book tells the whole story, from their humble beginnings at Charterhouse School, through Phil Collins' departure, right up to the present day, when the group seems to have split up. Author Robin Platts covers the band's history in great detail, drawing from his own interviews with past Genesis members and associates, and from extensive archival research. The book explores Genesis' career in great depth, including details about: the making of each album; how the group developed their songwriting approach and how it changed over three decades; why various members left and how the group survived those departures; details of bootlegs, demo tapes and unreleased recordings; information about each tour, including set lists; critical reaction to their records and concerts; a comprehensive discography; and many photographs of rare record sleeves and memorabilia. The book also includes a wealth of new information including the first ever interview with guitarist Mick Barnard. Even the most die-hard Genesis fan will find new revelations in this book. This is an essential guide to one of the most innovative rock groups ever.

2.0 out of 5 stars An interesting book, spoiled by too many mistakes, 8 Jan 2002
By Cookie (Dorset, UK) - See all my reviews
This book manages to avoid being 'yet another Genesis book' by covering areas and people that I have not seen covered in other books. There is of course plenty of the stuff you will have read in all the other Genesis books out there but there is enough new material to maintain an interest.
I just wish the book had been proof-read first. It looks like it has just been run through a spell-checker. There are so many errors in it that it becomes distracting at times. Some of the pictures have the wrong captions as well and not all the 'facts' are correct, so be careful.
A book for the true fan only, not recommended for someone who has only recently got into the band.

5.0 out of 5 stars extremely interesting well written with new facts, 25 Jun 2001
By A Customer
I thought, not another book about Genesis, when I came across it on this site. Surely there is nothing more to say. I bought it anyway. My scepticism was misplaced. I found it to be an extremely interesting and well written book which held my attention giving information in an easily digested format. The career of Genesis is covered from the late 60s up to the present day. There is a great deal of background information about the groups songs (who was responsible for what etc..) Comprehensive details about recording sessions and the live shows are also included as well as set lists for each tour. I have read a couple of other books about the group but, much to my surprise, I still found out quite a number of facts which were new to me. For instance, I think this is the first book to go into detail about Mick Barnard (the guitarist between Ant Phillips and Steve Hackett) The photographs of record sleeves and memorabilia add to the attractiveness and interest of this book. In conclusion, an extremely enjoyable read which is to be recommended for any Genesis fan.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't live up to expectation to be honest, 4 Nov 2001

I would briefly like to say to anyone well into
Genesis - avoid this book. And there's a lot of mistakes in it.Otherwise it's not to bad as an introduction to the band.
