Product Description

Synopsis
This primer uses clear, step-by-step instructions to teach the basics of knitting. Beginners will learn to master the techniques that are needed before starting a project and learn which choices result in successful garments. A natural progression of skills is taught, and each skill is punctuated by a knitting project, enabling first-time knitters to create simple scarves and sweaters. Patterns are presented in an accessible format, with text, photographs, and line drawings to offer advice, anticipate difficulties, and provide rescue techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teach Yourself to Knit!, 25 Aug 2003
I was advised to start knitting as a way of keeping my hands from getting stiff in the winter. The web and the bookshelves are stuffed with guides and information about how to knit, but I found this book simple, unpatronising and full of interesting patterns. Unlike many books, it doesn't throw you in at the deep end after only a few patterns, and it explains everything, from ways to holding the needle to mysterious sounding instructions like 'yo', to how to choose yarn. As the title suggests, it only sticks to the 'knit stitch', with successive books dealing with the 'purl' and then onwards to greater things, but I found this really useful since it enabled me to get one thing down whilst being able to concentrate on techniques like increasing and decreasing stitches, or using different sized needles for one garment. I've made several things in the book: the summer sweater, a pair of eye-burningly bright legwarmers, a hat, and the three scarf ruana, but it was the simple instructions and the steady progression of technique in the books that really sold it. Highly recommended if you want to start and also want up to date, attractive patterns. There isn't an orange and puce granny sweater in sight...

5.0 out of 5 stars Now learn to purl, 26 April 2005
By A Customer
After learning to knit with Sally Melville's first book, this is an ideal next step. As with The Knit Stitch, there are plenty of instructions and pictures, but also lots of chatty writing about knitting generally. Her patterns are good mix of women, men and children's designs and cover a realistic range of sizes!

5.0 out of 5 stars So much in one book!, 6 Dec 2007

What a wonderful book - dozens of really beautiful, original patterns in a wide range of sizes, plus really clear, easy to follow instructions for all sorts of techniques, including what to do if something goes wrong. And advice about choosing and using colour. All in all an excellent buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unpatronising, enthusiastic and great fun designs
A great learning book - dealing with the knit stitch alone allows you to concentrate on mastering the basics. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Oddly I too live in Brighton! The book is fantastic and she now has one out called "The Purl Stitch," well worth the money
