3.0 out of 5 stars Thorough on the basics but beware if its detail you need, 26 Nov 1999
By A Customer
A thorough book covering the basic API but beware if you need to get your hands dirty. As an example there are 36 pages devoted to ToggleButtons but if you are a more experienced programer who wants to write your own custom text Editor you will find "there are several predefined editor kits for both HTML and RTF text"as your only discussion on working with the swing.text.html or swing.text.rtf kits and documents !

If you want to get into the basic GUI components and customise them this is a good book - the stars are for that. But how many books are out there now that show us how to build a menubar but don't get much further - after all what is everyone doing out there with their GUI's anyway ?! The search goes on ......

2.0 out of 5 stars Confused and simplistic., 21 Jan 2002
By A Customer
If you're new to Swing and want the lowdown quickly on what components are available and how to bang together a simple usage of such components, then this text will give you a good head start.
It definitely beats having to wade through the tutorials on line, but does not however replace the tutorials as they have some fine detail not covered in the book.
In addition, the examples given in the book are difficult to read, are not explained in proper detail, and are simplistic.
The issue associated with making your Swing programs multi-threaded (and thus responsive) is hardly touched on (if at all), which is a major oversight

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books about for extensive coverage of Swing, 14 Feb 2001
By A Customer
I've read many Swing books in my time, and this is one of the best explained and easy to read book yet. Extensive coverage of all the main aspects with clear and concise meanings.

This book, I would say, is not for the beginner, but if extensive coverage of AWT is assumed, this is a must buy for conversion to Swing.

Go ahead and give it a shot, I did, and i'm not turning back. Happy Reading!!

This is the book I've been looking for for ages. Although I am an accomplished Java programmer, and can use AWT/Swing, I've never been able to use the features in depth since the... Read more
