This is the first book on the market to focus on Database Development for the Pocket PC using Microsoft's free eMbedded Visual Basic 3. Tiffany's book is designed to get software developers up to speed building Pocket Access database applications using eMbedded Visual Basic on the Pocket PC. The author has put his own Visual Basic background to work in developing advanced Pocket PC applications for large energy companies and it is from this perspective that he guides professional Visual Basic and Access programmers into the world of embedded software development. Tiffany's book gradually ramps up the reader's skills with each chapter building upon the previous one. After explaining the subset of the SQL language available on the Pocket PC, he guides the reader through ADOCE and ActiveSync in order to build and communicate with both local Pocket Access databases as well as remote SQL Server databases.

About the Author
Rob Tiffany is the CTO and Senior Technical Architect for Common Vision in Houston. Texas. Over the past decade, Rob has split his time between the Pacific Northwest and Texas, driving Trident submarines, working at software and dot-com startups, and throwing in some consulting for good measure. He started out in his programming career as a Visual Basic/SQL Server developer, moved on to Active Server Pages, jumped on the Java bandwagon for a while, and then finally settled on a more common-sense, less religious approach to solving problems with technology. Along the way, he developed his own B2C e-commerce package as well as a web-based document management system. Rob has published numerous articles for a variety of magazines on topics ranging from Java Servlets to Wireless.

A good book for beginners, starts off with how to create and delete databases, tables and indexes. It has a chapter on SQL language that can be used on a Pocket PC, a chapter on the ADOCE Connection Object and one on the ADOCE Recordset Object. At the end of the book is a chapter on building a database Manager application. It is written specifically for the Pocket PC but I managed to learn how to create applications for a Handheld by using this book. It doesn't go into a great deal of depth but its a very good "getting you started" book.
