I ordered a copy of Milepost due to seeing it recommended everywhere for driving through Alaska. I have to say, on receiving it, it was not a great deal of use for planning as there is just far too much detail to plough through, however, on picking up our RV and starting off it came into its own.
A note is made of anything and pretty much everything that you pass by with notes as to the milemarker (markers are frequent and obvious at the roadside) where it is situated.
Due to the lack of roads in Alaska, this actually makes for quite simple detail as you drive along and enables you to spot many things you would normally miss. We found it invaluable for noting which points to stop at to get the best views and found it very useful when deciding on the next nights RV park to stop at.
If you are hiring an RV, you'll probably find that most will come with a copy, and unless you've been before, it may well not make a lot of sense until you get there (and hence not be worth purchasing, let alone carrying in your luggage), but make sure you have a copy to hand whilst driving.

Having had a similar book for Iceland some years ago, I expected this to be a page by page map, with the "attractions" etc listed along the way. Instead there are some maps at intervals, with lots of text along the way. In order to plan a holiday it takes alot of work and I found that work I'd already done had been more productive and this added little. It's not easy to use and with it's size as well, it won't be making the trip with us.
