This book is disgusting, it advocates, hitting children - even babies. The latest scientific research has categorically proven that this sort of 'discipline' (I hesitate to call it that) WILL and DOES harm children psychologically. If you follow this book your child WILL grow up to have psychological problems. I am disgusted that Amazon sell it, it should be withdrawn from sale immediately.

This book came to my attention just before the BBC article about it, and all of the negative reviews on Amazon. There seems to be a co-ordinated campaign to have it removed from Amazon at the moment, and I too have written to Amazon.co.uk to request this. I noticed that hardly any of the reviews were of certified Amazon purchases, and have mostly been written in the past few days, which makes me suspect that most of the reviewers have not actually read the book. I therefore bought a copy, much as I hate to spend even small amounts of money on rubbish like this, and much as I hate putting even a few coppers into the hands of people like Michael and Debi Pearl.

Well, even those reviewers who haven't read the book have got their reviews just about right. This book is truly awful. It is not a general book on parenting, but focuses on physical punishment of children as young as four months, advising parents to hit them with implements from thin switches (for babies) to belts and larger tree branches for older children. They call this 'training' rather than punishment, the aim being to produce a child who will always respond with immediate and unquestioning obedience to the parent's commands. They claim that this does not amount to child abuse, but then they have a non-standard definition of child abuse. I worked in a Local Authority child protection team until my retirement two years ago, and can say with some authority that any parent found to be using the methods advocated in this book would have their children removed from them and be charged by the police for the offences perpetrated against them.Read more ›

If An author attempted to sell a book extolling the virtues of paedophilia, Amazon would be on it like a SHOT. And right so. So why, in the name of sanity, do they allow this garbage to continue to be sold. We now have a child, DEAD, as a direct result of the parenting 'advice' in this book.
It promotes CHILD ABUSE. Nothing more, nothing less. The authors are clearly religious fundamentalist whack jobs, as evidenced by their other writings (which I PROUDLY STOLE from a certain torrenting site, just to deprive these parasites of money.. as I did with this horrific nonsense).

I have no truck with evangelical religion, but in its defence, most of its practitioners aren't in the habit if finding beating children with pieces if plastic pipe..

To give you some examples of the 'training' this book advocates..

Using plastic tubing to beat children, since it hurts a lot but leaves fewer marks to alert authorities
Wearing the plastic tubing around the parent's neck as a constant reminder to obey
"Swatting" babies as young as six months old with instruments such as "a 12-inch willowy branch," thinner plastic tubing or a wooden spoon
"Blanket training" babies by hitting them with an instrument if they try to crawl off a blanket on the floor
Beating older children with rulers, paddles, belts and larger tree branches
"Training" children with pain before they even disobey, in order to teach total obedience
Giving cold water baths, putting children outside in cold weather and withholding meals as discipline
Hosing off children who have potty training accidents
Inflicting punishment until a child is "without breath to complain."

I cannot believe that you are selling this book. This is not a book about raising a child, this is a book on abuse and how to break and hurt a child. It glorifies punishment and pain and shouldn't be published never mind sold! This is not freedom of speech, it is child abuse, pure and simple. I am utterly disgusted that Amazon deem this acceptable to sell. Take a stance Amazon and stop selling it!!! I for one will be boycotting Amazon until this book is removed from sale. Disgusted. Utterly disgusted.
