This book belies its rather sober title. It is a collection of the most controversial of Mapplethorpe's erotic photographs, focusing specifically on the S/M pictures. Whilst some of these will doubtless disturb and provoke, the execution of the compositions is masterful and indicates the success of Mapplethorpe's attempt to make pornography an artform. The angle of light and the use of props is such that the properties of what is depicted become part of a strange and rare revelation of beauty. That Mapplethorpe's aesthetic is Catholic is something that is oft repeated, what this work reveals is the nature of the type of Catholic aesthetic involved here: baroque. The opening of such a vista is a true eschatological delight and makes this work essential viewing for anyone committed to thinking about the relation between representation of sexuality and the ultimate concerns of both photography and thought itself.
