Definately a good buy, 11 Jun 2000
After reading numerous VB site reviews that recommended this book as a 'must have', I purchased it. Yes, this a very good book, with a set focus on database programming that also touches on the subject of class modules, ActiveX components, developing Internet applications and how to distribute an application. The front cover states 'beginner to pro'...Sorry! I don't think so. If you are an absolute VB beginner, then I would not recommend this book just YET. The book is very fast paced, and if you have not been through the basics of coding and using controls, you will soon find yourself out of your depth. Its no good copying the code from this book into your app. if you don't understand what its doing and how it works. There are plenty of good beginner books out there that you should look at first BEFORE buying this book. Moving on to the database subject, this book covers ADO quite well, and in an understandable fashion, but what about DAO... its not dead and buried yet, nor is it likely to be for quite a few years to come; I would have liked this to have been included as well. Class modules and ActiveX, again... for the beginner? The short section on Internet applications seemed to be added as an afterthought, and I don't think it really belongs in this book. The chapter on distributing an application is pretty good, but knowing the problems the Package and Deploy wizard throws your way when you least expect it( like naming the cab files incorrectly etc), a chapter on trouble-shooting/debugging this wizard, would have been a welcome inclusion. In summary, this is a half-decent book, but real beginners beware, at least learn the basics first, before considering this book.

This is the best book I have ever seen for Visual Basic, great for beginners as well as experts, with lots of database related material. Aimed at a business environment, this book is an ideal addition to the company bookshelf.

The best programming book that I have ever read., 6 Dec 2005
The best programming book that I have ever read. I was already an MS Access developer; this book was invaluable in my learning VB6 and ADO (as well as better development techniques). I would not have gained my MCP (VB6 Desktop Applications) without the skills gained from Koop, Prince and Murach. Three years after buying the book, I still use it as my first reference point for any VB, VBA and ADO problems.
