Product Description

COBOL World Online, Feb. 1999
"Cram-packed with useful information and explained in such a way that the information fairly leaps off the page, Garvin, Eckols and Murach have done it again - 'DB2, Part 1' is another grand-slam winner."

Product Description
If you are looking for a practical DB2 book that focuses on application programming, this is the book for you. Written from the programmer's point of view, it will quickly teach you what you need to know to access and process DB2 data in your COBOL programs using embedded SQL. This second edition has been thoroughly updated and expanded to make it even more valuable to the programmer who is slugging it out on the job. You will learn: the critical DB2 concepts that let you understand how DB2 works; the basic DB2 coding features you will use in every program you write; how to use version 4 enhancements like outer joins and explicit syntax for inner joins; how to work with column functions, scalar functions, and subqueries to manipulate data; how to use error handling techniques and ROLLBACK to protect DB2 data; why program efficiency is vital under DB2...and more.

4.0 out of 5 stars A sound introduction to DB2 and SQL., 5 April 2001
By A Customer
This book serves as both a valuable introduction to DB2 and to writing SQL embedded in Cobol to inquire on and update data stored in it. I bought a copy when assigned to a project that involved renovating a large DB2 database to make it Euro compliant. The book is well laid out and the instructions easy to apply. Within a week I was writing programs containing well structured SQL code and had become the most popular member of the team as everyone wanted to borrow the book to get up to speed and it swiftly became a well thumbed first port of call for any queries. I recommend this book for experienced Cobol programmers new to DB2 who want to get up and running quickly and efficiently. My only significant reservation, and the reason I havn't given it the full five stars, is with the price. I would certainly think twice about buying Volume 2 on these grounds and would recommend Craig Mullins' excellent and comprehensive 'DB2 Developers Guide' if you want to develop your DB2 skills further. However in the right environment this book will pay for itself many times over in increased productivity and is worth the investment. Even better, if you've got (or are) a far-sighted Project Manager ask them to put a copy on the Project expenses.

4.0 out of 5 stars No complaint about the contents, just the pricing., 3 Nov 2003
By Mr. M. C. Gaylard (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this book as an alternative to the IBM SQL workshop material as this was more geared to COBOL. I found it very useful.

On the downside though I feel that at the price, parts 1 and 2 could have been combined into a single volume. There are after all a number of other such similarly large tomes at the price of a single part here.

No complaint about the contents, just the pricing.

I bought the second book at the same time as I was feeling flush.

Must admit that I have referred to it less. Not sure if that is a reflection of me, circumstances, or the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Teaches the basics, 27 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This book teaches the basics but, the more I have used DB2, the more I find that this book does not meet my needs. If the idea of this book is to persuade people to use it as a taster, and go on and purchase book 2, it has failed for me. At the prices charged for technical books, get all the detail in a single volume.
