Product Description

From the Author

We Grieve For The Living
On Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998 & again on Saturday October 31st, the History Channel aired a TV documentary regarding the Leopoldville Disaster produced by Reuters Television Investigative Reporter Larry Bond. Author Allan Andrade was consulted during the research stage of the documentary and his name was listed in the program's credits.

The Producer of the program, Larry Bond, recently wrote a review of Andrade's book which stated in part, "With skills developed over 20 years as a New York City Police Investigative Lieutenant he started digging into the dusty, hidden files with the tenacity of a real-life Columbo. What he found was that even though the ship's sinking was hidden it was not forgotten.

Andrade tracked down not only survivors but also relatives of the victims: sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, wives....The stories they tell him are heartbreaking: parents driven to early graves by grief, impoverished wives, fatherless children, all wondering what had happened to their men. Many survivors, having never talked about the event even to their own families for 50 years, opened up to Andrade with harrowing stories.

None of them had forgotten anything. Many are still reminded in cold sweat nightmares. Cursed by human memory to recall so clearly a tragic event that took place during a few hours on one day over a half century ago. Andrade had the difficult task of telling the truth about the sinking of the S.S. Leopoldville and finding again that it is not for the dead that we grieve but for the living."

4.0 out of 5 stars Review forthcoming, 18 Aug 2003
By Lucy née Eberhardt (Budapest, Hungary) - See all my reviews
I am trying to locate a copy of this book.
By the grace of God my father survived this debacle, came back to PA, and went on with life. If he hadn't I wouldn't be here looking for the book, and my Infantry Captain son wouldn't be researching the subject for a Master's Degree paper.
I only knew it was Christmas Eve, the boat was sinking, and Dad was one of the lucky ones whose jump was successful, even as his buddy beside him missed. He refused to speak of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reader Left With Lasting Memory and Appreciation, 9 Jul 1999
By A Customer
I have finished reading Mr. Andrade's book and must state that he possesses a true talent for writing! This book is an extremely well-written tribute to all on-board the Leopoldville that night. Mr. Andrade has managed to bring respect and remembrance to those who survived, and to those who perished in this disaster. It is evident that Mr. Andrade has placed a tremendous amount of personal time and effort into his research. I have spoken to the author on several occasions since reading his book. He is truly a very warm person, who takes a personal interest in each survivor/victim story. He plans to attend a Leopoldville Reunion in Georgia this October to pay his personal respects to those lost and to those surviving this tragedy. I can also appreciate the manner in which Mr. Andrade deals with the personal, human aspect and impact of this disaster. He also states many facts and statistics, but does not make this the book's sole purpose. Reading this book, even if you are not personally involved in it by being a survivor, or family member of a survivor or victim, is most certainly worth the time. I sincerely hope that Mr. Andrade will publish a second book on the Leopoldville. He has continued to acquire much new information from people connected to this tragedy who were unaware of the cover-up or the publishing of his firdt book. These newly-found families deserve to have their loved ones also remembered. I am one of these. My uncle died on this ship. His body was never recovered. I would like to have him remembered for his sacrifice.

5.0 out of 5 stars heroes should never be forgotten, 31 May 1999
By A Customer
this is a book about a little known disaster which occured dec 24, 1944. members of the 66th division were crossing the english channel on there way to join the battle of the bulge. The book is a tribute to the men who died that fateful night. it is a well written tribute dedicated to the men who went down and also those who survived. it is about the courage of the men of the 66th and also takes a personal look at the families of these soldiers. This book makes a great gift for someone interested in world war II history. It is a time of year when these brave men should never be forgotten. The author spent a great deal of time covering the tragedy, this book will be a movie someday.
