Product Description

Review

"Rarely does a publication address an unmet need as thoroughly as Alternative Medicine and Multiple Sclerosis...Dr. Allen Bowling is uniquely qualified to produce a book on CAM, having a doctorate in pharmacology and clinical experience as a neurologist treating people with MS. Organized in a user-friendly format, the topics are grouped in logical categories. In addition, references are provided, encouraging further exploration. Highly recommended for people with MS, their families, and their health-care providers." -- InsideMS "Alternative Medicine and Multiple Sclerosis is a much-needed resource. Dr. Bowling has done an excellent job of making his reader more aware of the myriad forms of non-traditional therapies available." -- Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers "In Dr. Allen Bowling's Alternative Medicine and Multiple Sclerosis, he enables the reader to find unconventional options that may provide symptomatic relief when conventional therapies for multiple sclerosis are limited or otherwise unsatisfactory. Dr. Bowling explains the potentially dangerous interactions between complementary and alternative (CAM) therapies and medical treatments utilized in the management of MS; identifies CAM therapies that are possibly effective, low risk, and inexpensive; and exposes ineffective, dangerous, or needlessly costly alternative therapies. Alternative Medicine and Multiple Sclerosis is a very highly recommended and informative addition to any personal or professional multiple sclerosis reading list." --The Bookwatch February 2001

Product Description

These therapies are organized alphabetically so that readers can readily pinpoint a specific treatment and learn about its origins, merits, and possible uses in MS. They will find in-depth discussions on topics that include acupuncture, biofeedback, chiropractic medicine, cooling therapy, yoga, diets and fatty acid supplements, the use of herbs, vitamins and minerals, and much more. With this book, readers will be able to: * find unconventional options that may provide symptomatic relief when conventional therapies are limited * learn about potentially dangerous interactions between CAM therapies and medical treatments used in the management of MS * identify CAM therapies that are possibly effective, low risk, and inexpensive * recognize ineffective, dangerous, or costly alternative therapies A section on integrating conventional and unconventional medicine links specific symptoms to potentially useful CAM therapies. This means that if readers have a particular concern, such as spasticity or bladder problems, they will be able to identify potentially useful alternative strategies. A glossary of popular supplements that are commonly used in MS care is provided.

3.0 out of 5 stars Inconclusive, 6 Jun 2005
By Atheana (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
For those who, like myself, are looking for (nutritional and/or CAM) guidance - this is not the book to find it. If anything, it raises more questions then it provides answers. This publication is full of contradictions - i.e., the intake of antioxidants may be productive and even recommended in MS, given that oxidative processes play a major role in the etiology of the disease. However, immediately following this nugget is the warning that antioxidants could also have immunostimulant effects and could in fact worsen the course of disease. So, in this case - to use or not to use (antioxidants), that is the question. Or one of them anyway.

Similarly, there are other areas where questions, if not doubts, are raised and not dealt with conclusively or definitively. This in itself leaves the reader even more confused than when they started out. When questioned about this, the good doctor then tries to offer answers by proposing you buy his new book on supplements and MS or some such topic. Not what I would call helpful.

Having said all that, there is the fact that Alternative Medicine and Multiple Sclerosis does provide information which you might not otherwise have known, ie alfalfa is (supposedly) an immunostimulant - and therefore not something an MS patient might wish to indulge in. On the other hand, who is to say? One of the major problems with this condition is that it is largely an unknown - and therefore nearly EVERYTHING to do with it is a hypothesis.

It really is down to the reader/person with MS to decide what does and does not work for them. And you don't need to buy/read this book to know that.

By A Customer
I found this book comprehensive in the therapies covered, but a little negative in the possible benefits derived.
