The author describes his experiences photographing lightning, tornadoes, and hurricanes, and covers the techniques and dangers of storm chasing.

From the Publisher
Now you can ride shotgun with a real life tornado chaser!

OK, you've seen Twister and you want to ride shotgun with a Storm Chaser. Well now you can! The first book on this fascinating subject, Storm Chaser is the REAL story of what it's like to pursue untamed skies.

In Storm Chaser, professional storm chaser and award-winning photojournalist Warren Faidley, shares his vivid, personal accounts of confronting some of our planet's most violent weather. And not only does he describe it, he shows it! Through his dramatic photos he transports the reader into the paths of some of nature's greatest atmospheric phenomena. Over 100 images include awe-inspiring photos of Tornado Alley's funnel clouds and supercell thunderstorms, as well as breathtaking desert lightning.

Feel the wind and the wonder as ears pop and papers float while riding through a forming tornado. Walk with him on his quest for the ultimate shot, fighting off flying bats, bullets, spiders and cobwebs. Scale a narrow ledge in driving rain to get the shot of a lifetime. And ride along while he films a barrage of softball size hailstones as they pulverize his chase vehicle.

Discover how a childhood thrill on a bike turns into a unique and dangerous profession requiring the combined skills of a meteorologist, a photographer and a race car driver. Learn the science a tornado. Explore the 500-term storm chasing glossary, and get some tips from the pro on photographing severe weather.

Few of us will ever experience the thrill and fear of coming face-to-face with these spectacles of nature. In Storm Chaser, from the safety of your own homes, you can.

Author of Storm Chaser
Biographical information

The world's only full-time, professional storm chaser, Warren Faidley is a noted photojournalist. His work has appeared in Life, National Geographic, and many other publications. A technical consultant and contributing cinematographer to the motion picture Twister, (a film about storm chasers) he is a frequent guest on talk shows, news programs and specials, as an expert on storm chasing and severe weather safety.

Chasing an average of 100 storms annually, he travels throughout the U.S. pursuing tornadoes, lightning storms, and hurricanes. A long time resident of Tucson, Arizona, Faidley, 39, is the owner of Weatherstock News and Photo Agency, a company that specializes in the marketing of weather images. His weather related businesses include eight worldwide photographic and cinematography agents and a U.S. Patent for a special camera mount.

In addition to commercial applications, his work is also used for scientific, educational, safety and charitable projects, including those of the American Red Cross and the National Weather Service. During his chases he often serves as a volunteer severe weather "spotter," by relaying critical storm information to the National Weather Service and local Emergency Management agencies.

Faidley received a degree in Journalism from the University of Arizona. He is the recipient of numerous journalism awards including the William Randolph Hearst Foundation Journalism Award and several Associated Press Awards. With Stephen Kramer, he published Lightning, a children's book on lightning. He began chasing storms full-time in 1988, when Life Magazine published one of his stunning lightning images and billed him as a "storm chaser."

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!, 24 April 2000
By A Customer
I have always been interested in tornadoes and severe weather and when I stumbled on this book and read the other reviews, I decided it was worth a look. What I discovered was a book that I wasn't able to put down and actually read it in one go. It is great for people who aren't really interested in the scientific side of tornadoes - and for those that are. It is worth buying the book just for the pictures which are stunning. I would whole heartedly recommend this book to anyone and I can't wait to get over to the States to see a tornado in real life.

5.0 out of 5 stars I thought I was really there!, 8 Jun 1999

This was such a great book. The information that Warren Faidley gives in the book is incredible. It would make one think that they actually were a storm chaser. The pictures of lightning and tornadoes were superior. I have never seen such great photography.

5.0 out of 5 stars The photos were the most beautiful I've ever seen!, 9 May 1999
By A Customer
Warren Faidley's book was eloquently written, very descriptive, and even humorous at times. His photography talent was apparent and inspired me to take up photography myself. I wish I could say that I'm the next Warren Faidley, but I'm not quite that good! At the end of the chase descriptions, he includes a storm chase glossary and some photography advice to help you take better pictures. Overall it was very interesting and a good read.
