4.0 out of 5 stars A book to read if you are Dutch or have a dutch friend, 4 Jan 2002
By A Customer
A book which tells you, very good humourdly and very straight about the Dutch Culture and its people. As a Dutch national living in the UK for twenty years I read the book with mixed feelings ( Iam not like that! I don't do that!) But is has been a joy to read .It has certainly been interesting how people see us gloggies. If you are dutch and live abroad this is the book to give to your friends ( after you have read it yourself). It will show that through all the funny little quirks and mannerisms the dutch are a generous and caring nation ( most of us).

5.0 out of 5 stars Very amusing observations of the idiosyncrasies of the Dutch, 17 April 1999
By A Customer
The authors both lived in the Netherlands for some years and some of the book will be more meaningful to those who have intimate knowledge of the denizens in their home environment. The book includes observations on home life, child rearing, the cinema, work ethic, habits and customs, language, food and (IMHO) the main obsessions of shopping and money. I laughed out loud at the descriptions of the national obsession with coffee and the unique features of the smallest room. The book confirmed my view that it is nigh on impossible to have a conversation in the native language unless one is 100% fluent and 'accentless'. My only criticism is that it does not cover, in sufficient depth, regional competitiveness and the characteristic of tact(lessness), but perhaps that is personal experience. Highly recommended (I hope my Dutch relations will continue to speak to me)

5.0 out of 5 stars Scary how much is true!, 30 Jan 2007
By M. L. Griffioen "aisling_greenleaf" (THE NETHERLANDS) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this book just today, not from Amazon, but in a local Dutch bookstore. Being Dutch, born and raised, I'm surprised at how much of this is actually true! Ok, some secrets we would have rather kept to ourselves but hey? if you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at. Ignore the statements about this being unreadable, it's a fun book to browse through and have a laugh. Don't take it too seriously, just as you do with the Dutch A definate succes!
