5.0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing!, 21 May 2002
By keithgell@yahoo.com (Sussex, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Ars Magica is a well kept secret.

I was stung into writing this review by seeing Ars Magica only given 4 stars. In my opinion, Ars Magica is just amazing, its the best game of its genre.

As the title suggests, it's all about Magic. Your characters will be magicians, work with multiple types of magic, make magical artifacts, be, and in turn, teach apprentices, and live in magical communities, get involved in desputes with other magicians, have familiars, etc, etc.

Thay are less likely to run around dungeons, slaying monsters to steal treasure.

IMHO its the best RPG in the world for magic, just as CoC is the best for horror.

4.0 out of 5 stars FRP for fans of mighty magicians, 15 Mar 1999
By A Customer
The basic systems are straightforward and simple. Ten sided dice decide everything on as few or as many rolls the troupe likes. Character generation can be as fast or as involved as you like. The virtues and flaws section is what makes characters come out unique in game terms. Stories and background spring to mind easily with the support of this mechanism. The magic system is powerful and flexible, the mages generated through it are very varied and not easy to compare in terms of power. A mage who is master, but specialized in one art might easily fall to one who is of mediocre skill - but knowledgable in an art the other does not know. The system has its hidden favorites though - certain combinations of knowledge give a definite edge to the mages possessing them. The background setting is medieval europe, you can change that easily, though. You will have to do a lot of preparation anyway, or have to buy some supplementary material. One thing I noticed is, that there is, in game mechanics, no real reason for the mages to hide - as they do according to the rules. You will have to make something up yourself or change that, to clean out this inconsistency. On the whole this is a game suited for a mature audience away from hack and slash (which just is dead boring under this system) and into psychology (the first time I played this game I witnessed two friends turn away from each other in real life. Take care). There are the mentioned glitches, but I have learnt to live with them and like them.
