(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Peter Cushing, a part of an English film-watcher's mental landscape, lays out his life up to the late 1980's, something he later expanded on, in regard to his famous Hammer film roles, in a later volume of autobiography. He found his way onto the stage in pre-WW2 reportery theatre (after a hard struggle) and then went to Hollywood on spec, evntually getting a star contract. On outbreak of war he volunteered, only to be told his medical condition rendered him unfit for anything active. He nonetheless paid for his passage and partly worked his passage back to the UK, where, most importantly, he met his wife, a union mainly above the physical level. Both were sure they had met in previous life or lives.

Indeed, an important part of Cushing was his deep spirituality, which comes out in his story of attending a bullfight in Mexico. Disgusted, he leaves, but not before offering up a prayer both for the deluded human beings participating in the arena and for the bull so degraded and hurt in the "spectacle".

From the early 1950's, Cushing became a big star in England, both on TV and in film. He remained a recognized face everywhere in his own country until the end of his life. The last few pages indicate the belief of both Cushing and his wife, Helen, that they would, indeed, meet again, one day. This is a recommeded read, whether in large print or the ordinary size version I own, not presently available on Amazon.
