1.0 out of 5 stars Best Avoided Unless You Are Religious, 7 Nov 2000
I ordered this book purely on the strength of the reviews, which were excellent. Having suffered severe depression in the past I was eager to read this book and was confident it would help my on the long road to recovery. I could not have been more wrong. I am not particularly religious but live my life within spiritual parameters, so I was interested to see that the author was a Born Again Christian. Unfortunately I soon discovered this book had numerous references to God and the Bible which were used to seemingly preach to the reader on the rights and wrongs of a supposedly happy, fulfilled life. Of course everyone has a choice whether or not they wish to allow God into their life, and whether they wish to read this book. In this book happiness/fulfilment and the Christian faith appear to be inextricably linked; it seems you can't have one without the other. I think it is wholly inappropriate for the author to use a book about mental illness to moralise about society & normal behaviour (ie sex before marriage, working mothers, material possessions)centring wholly on one faith in a world of many. Becoming at one with God the Christian way may be one way to happiness and an end to depression, but it is not the only way and anyone who is not religious/Christian (or intersted in becoming so)would be advised to think carefully before ordering it.Apologies to anyone who may be offended by my comments, that was not my intention, i just did not want anyone to make the same mistake i did when i bought the book. However i would recommend "Overcoming Depression" by Paul Gilbert. This book was used extensively during a course of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy i had and i found it extremely well written and enlightening.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mirror, mirror, who's the fairest...?, 11 April 2003
I endeavoured to read the entirety of this book but the author's vanity defeated my resolution as it kept popping-up which I found discouraging. In simple terms the author failed to engage my attention.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing!!!, 20 Oct 2007
I've suffered with depression for a few years now(5 yrs) and only this year did I start to recover. I've done the counselling sessions, group meetings...etc and saw people that were a lot worse off than me.As a result I get really really annoyed with authors that try and make depression look like its nothing serious. IT IS a life threatening disorder and I think it is scary when a preacher decides to go out on a crusade and entitles his book avoiding and overcoming depression. Being depressed is not the same thing as being sad or having the blues as anyone suffering from or living with a depressive would know. This is a condition the affects your whole life and also has a profound effect on friends and family who love you and want to help but don't know the best way to. It is not some topic to be used for religious debates. The author offers a very simplistic solution to overcoming depression, "believe in Jesus Christ". Well, news flash, I am a christian and i'm still struggling to deal with depression...Oh hang on, I am catholic and the author doesn't approve of them either.

I'm sorry but if you're really depressed stay away from this book or you'll just feel worse. If you, (like me) are really trying to overcome depression, struggling to live with a depressive friend or relation,I humbly suggest Depression; the way out of your prison by Dorothy Rowe or Undoing Depression, by Richard O'Connor who himself was a depressive. These have helped me alot.
