5.0 out of 5 stars addicted to knitting socks, 23 Feb 2002
By A Customer
I have been knitting socks for about two years now. It is very addictive. After you do the first couple of plain practice pairs you will want to expand your style. Simply socks is the perfect book for the first pair and for when you are ready to start experimenting. Colorfull illustrations, clear instructions, helpfull hints and beautiful ideas. You will never wear boring socks again!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Twinkly toes, 19 Sep 2003
By Joanna Daneman (Middletown, DE USA) - See all my reviews

Turkish patterns, like many Oriental patterns, have a balance of negative and positive (dark and light) and have eye-teasing geometric properties. Like other Islamic art, the patterns are abstract and not a representation of recognizable things, though they may be titled "Earring", "Moustache" or "Poppy."

The patterns are lovely on socks, and these are knitting from the toe-up, in the fashion of the Eastern European and Oriental knitters. The colors Zilboorg chooses are always thrilling.

This book is a reprint of "Fancy Feet", put out by another publisher.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful sourcebook, but not for beginners, 22 April 2004
Anna Zilboorg does it again. Inspiring designs, beautiful colours. This is a book you are likely to flip through and each time see something new that you like.

However, like her book on mittens, she does assume a certain degree of knowledge about the sock knitting process, instructions are written rather than presented with illustrations, suggesting to me that a less experienced knitter may have problems getting to grips with this technique. Also, she is rather vague about the size of needles required, yarns used (note for English knitters, all terms are American - for worsted read aran weight, for sport, dk, for fingering 4 ply) and sizes obtained. This all said, I had no problem with the patterns themselves once I had got to grips with these idiosyncracies. Its well, well worth the effort and definately worth preserving such a super craft which is sadly dying out in Turkey and beyond. Read and be inspired.
