4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing is Perfect!, 14 Feb 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Bomb the Suburbs (Paperback)
but this is as near as your gonna get to it! -Upski's sharp, thoughtful style of journalism [although plain in vocabulary terms - But thats not necessarily a bad thing! - and it does do wonders for the book - like he said, books/articles have already been published for that type of audience] and undistorted view of what Hip Hop and the lifestyle that it en-tales is, is not only uplifting, refreshing and original, but most importantly thought provoking...its a cliché, but one of the reviewers on the back of the book says that he [a member of the Zulu Nation] found it thought provoking also and i was amazed when i was thinking about some of the issues Upski talks about in the shower!

Through brilliant illustrations [some excellent graf out lines amongst other things] stories, personal experiences [informal interviews with the 'people on the street' hes met on his travels, who claim to be 'down' with Hip Hop], antidotes, formal interviews "and a little bulshit" Upski says what is Hip Hop culture in the mid nineties. Its also important to stress that he does cover topics such as freight hopping and youth/streetculture in general.[although, once again it just adds to the intrest of the book]

I recognize a lot of what he was talking about, even though he does exclusively talk about the US scene and at times in particular about the Chicago scene [his birth place, the city not the scene!] and a lot of experiences i've shared [the paranoia that ensues writing!].....to not buy this would be a grave mistake, hes broadened my out look on Hip Hop culture and i've had peeps at his new book 'No more Prisons' and it looks as though hes gonna take it to the next level...this book helps you grow out of Hip Hop into a new world of social activism [that doesn't mean i don't still like Hip Hop culture!] theres much more that could be said, but i'll leave it at that...BUY IT NOW.

5.0 out of 5 stars Upski is one of THE greatest writers on Hip-Hop, 28 May 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bomb the Suburbs (Paperback)
Upski delivers one of the freshest books on Hip-Hop in a society where we are forgetting the actual meaning of the art. His interviews with some of the most infamous names in writing and rap are a gem. This book is an instant classic to anyone who wants to learn more about the culture and more about themselves. You're hooked like a fish from the front cover to the last page. It's ill.
