Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Most Web developers pick up a book to learn how to use a language like JavaScript looking for practical examples of how to get things done. The Book of JavaScript is plenty practical: it hits the mark as a reader-friendly and well-organised tutorial on JavaScript.

The book assumes no prior knowledge in JavaScript or other procedural languages, but a good familiarity with HTML is best. The well-thought-out text focuses on various programming goals--like rollovers and form validation--instead of the anatomy of the JavaScript language itself. The fast-moving chapters skilfully weave text with example code. Sections of the code and the related sections of the accompanying text are numbered, a convention that is very helpful in teaching new techniques and later on for quick reference.

Throughout the book, real-world examples of JavaScript in action, such as a clock script from NASA's site, illustrate its applications. A page from salon.com shows frame techniques too, for instance. Ambitious readers can complete assignments to test their knowledge. The companion CD-ROM contains all of the code as well as correct answers for the assignments.

Of all the JavaScript tutorials out there, The Book of JavaScript is one of the most engaging and truly effective. --Stephen W. Plain

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tutorial for the Javascript newbie, 28 Jul 2001
By A Customer
As an experienced programmer with no background in either C or Java I found this book exceptionally clear and easy to follow. Because it doesn't assume any previous programming experience it doesn't cut corners, and isn't peppered with lots of 'just like C' comments which are unhelpful to those of us who don't know C.

Thau! is a very clear writer, the examples are well set out and follow logically from each other. Many can be lifted from the CD and be useful in your own pages. Be warned though as the book says at the start it is a tutorial not a reference book, you will still need to go and buy one of those as well once you start writing your own code.

All in all I would have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone who wants to learn Javascript, the experience programmer will get through it quicker as they can skip some of the basics of programming. The complete newbie can pick up some very good advice on programming.

2.0 out of 5 stars a book with early promise but fails to deliver the goods., 14 May 2001
By A Customer
Having some good basic knowledge of programming in C, I thought this would be a good book to help make an easy jump to javascript, a language with much rudimentary similarity to C. Unfortunately, although the book offers some of the basic scripting I wanted to add to my web sites, I was disappointed to find that the book of javascript was quite confusing, even though I have sufficient C and HTML skills that the jump from one language to the next should be a stress free occurence. The book claims to make the beginner with an interest in javascript very proficient with practice as long as HTML skills were already in place, but the style of the book tends to confuse and hinder the learning process. Although great care is taken to explain exactly what each piece of code is doing, I did not find enough emphasis on seamlessly incorporating the scripts with HTML. On the other hand, one big plus for this book is that the example code is laid out in an intelligent style, making for easy readability. The inclusion of a CD with the example code and some good freeware and software demos is another plus, though I do not think it makes up for much of its shortcomings. If you want to learn javascript from scratch as a beginner, this may not be the book for you. Never-the-less, there is still some interesting code in this book which some may find useful.
