4.0 out of 5 stars This book may change your view of the game..., 4 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This golf instruction book is completely like no other that I have read, and I have read a lot of them in the persuit of a repetative golf swing. I have a handicap of 10, but I still do not have any real consistency to my game. I have just read this book and it emphasises the simple aspects of propelling a small white ball in a straight line towards a flag. Unlike other books he does not concentrate on golf mechanics but more on feel and the very basics of a golf swing. I do not know where I had heard about this book before but I am glad my wife bought it for me. My golf feels better already and my mind has been cleared of a lot of 'junk' allowing me to enjoy the game more. I wish Mr de la Torre had produced a video as well, however the book is fairly straight forward. If you want technical stuff go for Leadbetter - if you want simple good technique buy this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Inappropriately Titled, 4 Mar 2002
By A Customer
The title of the book is not reflected in the content. If you find the "swing the club and forget how you are doing it" philosophy works for you, then go for this book. It is well written on that subject.
However if you want to know the different components of a good swing and how they work together, forget this one. The basic swing technique presented is 1. swing the club over your right shoulder using both your hands, 2. swing your arms down and through to the finish. That's it!
The book does cover ball flight analysis quite comprehensively, but unfortunately the solution to most errant trajectories revolves around the above simplistic theory so is a bit limiting.

On the plus side the book is written in a friendly chatty style and was pleasant to read.
It looks like this approach may work for some people and if so fine, but avoid it if you feel you need to know a little more in depth about the swing to progress.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed, 2 July 2009
By Steven M. Clayton (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had high expectations of this book having been an advocate of Ernest Jones swing principles.

I really wanted to love it but had a sense of anti climax on completing the book for the first time.

There is a lot of filler in here. The core message of the book could have been comfortably condensed into a volume 25% of this size.

I am left with a strong impression that the principles of the jones/de la Torre method are difficult to implement based on reading a book, i am sure they would reap fantastic benefits with hands on, personal instruction. Although the same could be said about every golf instruction book.

Having said that, i have succesfully incorporated elements of this method into my parts of my game. Specifically when pitching and using short irons i focus on nothing mechanical and purely on making a rhythmical, balanced golf swing which is resulting in crisp striking and a higher straighter ball flight which great.

With the driver and longer clubs i found that this approaches resulted in 10% less distance with some loss of accuracy and alas, if i dont have a particular swing thought at the start of the backswing and the start of the downswing i come 'over the top' with the longer clubs and such conscious intervention in the golf swing goes against this method of swinging the clubhead.

So, ultimately i have ended up with a hybrid method which has got me consistantly breaking 80 for the first time in my life for which i am grateful.

I must say I have just started to 'teach' my daughter to play golf and it is clear there is no better methodology to employ when teaching begineers and juniors than the one advocated in this book. Perhaps if i had been taught this way I would be more fully able to implement the methods in this book rather than having to combat 20 years worth of ingrained bad habits!

All in all, a good book for the collection but not the golfing 'bible' i was really after.
