3.0 out of 5 stars The Cohen's idea of One Year Off is hardly "roughing it"., 11 Aug 1999
By A Customer
A good read but hardly the typical family's reality. Not many off us take a vacation with nanny in-tow, nor do we return to purchase a home in Ross (one of the Bay Area's richest suburbs). I resented Cohen's self-depiction as "one-of-us" and felt his adventure inaccessible to anyone outside his socio-economic class.

Having said that, it is a good read just to glimpse some of the exotic scenes outside the U.S.

Would have liked more follow-up on how they met some of the challenges of traveling with their kids. I found Cohen had a tendancy to ask a question but never gave us the answer (eg he wonders how they will feed their kids on the road --who are picky eaters-- and then neglects to tell us what the kids ended up eating to remain healthy during the trip.

1.0 out of 5 stars Insufferable writing, 27 Aug 1999
By A Customer
David Cohen seems incapable of looking at the world except as a pampered, racially superior American. He is the smuggest fellow I've come across in a book since many a Jane Austen character. No deep thinker and his book reflects his shallowness. He loves his wealth though.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book was outstanding. I recommend it to all., 2 Sep 1999
By A Customer
One Year Off was sheer delight from beginning to end. David Cohen wrote with a refreshing candor, not pretending the year was perfect at all times. After the fact, he even debated whether decision to take three young children abroad under such often perilous conditions had been such a good idea. I think we would all agree that it was. He was a devoted father and husband and I think his family will never forget the experiences they had, though there were times when they probably wished they'd stayed home! I know what I shall give my friends for Christmas. This book should appeal to everyone.
