From the Publisher
SynopsisLaurie Henry nurtures writers throughout the long and sometimes lonely task of writing a novel. Her imaginative activities offer ways to approach every stage of the process, from creating characters to shaping the story, from exploring themes to revising and polishing. She helps writers develop a schedule, conduct research, benefit from bad days, even think of a title. Each activity also includes an inspiring quote from a well-known writer--Austen, Dickens, Fitzgerald, Naylor, Rice, Updike, Roth, Kingslover, and many others. The keen sense of risk and play that runs throughout "The Novelists Notebook" will lead writers to create richer, livelier work.
Sample exercise: Create a document written by one of your characters--a job application or resume, a high school essay, a list of New Years resolutions, a peculiar grocery list. Your goal is to explore some aspect of the character that would not be clear through the portrayal of his thoughts and actions alone.
About the author: Laurie Henry is the author of "The Fiction Dictionary" and is associate editor of "STORY" magazine. She teaches at Raymond Walters College, a branch of the University of Cincinnati.
