5.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide to writing fiction, 28 April 1998
By A Customer
Though it seems a bit overwhelming at first, heavy with academic style, Fiction Writer's Workshop rises in value as you perform the exercises. Josip Novakovich draws upon modern as well as classic literature to illustrate his points. The explanations are thorough and comprehensive. Of the most value are his exercises, each designed to teach, inspire and develop the writer skills within us all. Definitely worth adding to any writer's library.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid, and helpful, but heavy on lists and at times tedious, 27 Sep 2008
By Daniel Bor (Cambridge, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Moderately useful book for budding writers, with many excellent quotes from literature to illustrate his points admirably. The last chapter, on revision, is extremely useful, and the exercises are largely sensible and fun. But on the whole it's somewhat tedious and pedestrian a guide. For instance, he likes to list things - different types of beginnings, voices, etc., but most such lists are pretty obvious and he rarely tells you what's good and bad about each option. The UEA equivalent book, "The Creative Writing Coursebook" edited by Julia Bell and Paul Magrs, is superior in almost every way and if you've read that book, this one adds virtually nothing, and misses a lot.
