It always strikes me as funny that in our daily lives we pass through a whole spectrum of emotions and show them in many ways, some obvious and some subtle, yet in our fiction we often have trouble moving our characters through emotions effectively. Read the first page

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't deliver, 26 Mar 2005
By A Customer
I saw this title and thought 'wow! This is going to be a helpful book'.

What a disappointment when the book arrived! The content simply doesn't live up to the promise of the title.

All the book does is tell us the importance of creating character emotions. But it doesn't show us how to do it.

Although it warns that it's easy to write emotions badly, it doesn't teach how to write them well.

It gives examples of 'good' scenes, but doesn't help us to create our own.

As a professional author, I'm aware of several 'tools' writers can use to create character emotions effectively. What a shame that the author of this book isn't aware of them, or is unable or unwilling to share them.

Great title - poor content.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stimulus for writing, not too heavy, 11 Jun 2007
By baddkittyred (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I was a bit wary about buying this book as it had quite a negative review. I'm glad I did. This book provides stimulating examples of both good and bad narrative, and explores all the commonest emotions you will write about. Agreed, it is not deeply analytical or academic, but it doesn't need to be. If you're looking for something to help you along, jog your imagination, then this book is as good for that as any other I've read on the subject. I'd give it a thumbs up!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good enough..., 21 May 2009
By A. Sherman (London, UK) - See all my reviews

I found this book to be very useful in the beginning stages of my writing. It highlights thirty-six emotions in total and in each chapter Hood provides good and bad examples of these as well as exercises for you to try out.

The only negative point I can highlight about the book is that it is repetitive in its structure. Hood will only show you three bad examples, explain why they are bad, show you three good examples and explain why they are good, and that is really the whole book.

In saying that, I would recommend at least reading it. It's like a dictionary: you'll only use it when you need to remind yourself to 'show and not tell' the emotion. It has definitely helped me in the past when I have had writers' block, but be aware that it is not a 'how-to-book' that walks you through the motions, you have to do all the thinking - but that's a good thing, right!
