This book is a must for any avid or new spinner - wheel or handspindle and is a great introduction to this ancient and peaceful craft. The articles, taken from a regular publication, are put together very well and cover different techniques from different cultures on the art of handspindle spinning. I was originally looking for information on spinning and plying with a Navajo spindle and, having found nothing, discovered this marvellous book. The article alone on Navajo techniques is worth the investment. Not only are techniques covered in detail but the history of the handspindle is also included, fascinating for those who are hooked on spinning! One important factor of all craft books are photographs that demonstrate how techniques are accomplished - essential for those who wish to teach themselves, photos are a must and are included within the pages. Above all, this book shows and encourages anyone of any age that they can spin with a handspindle, with a spindle that is purpose bought or one that is handmade. In a world overtaken by modern equipment and technology, spinning is a natural and non-mechanical way to keep in touch with the Natural World and its pace of life - peaceful and non-demanding - and shows us patience in our fast paced lives. This book does its best to bring this ancient craft back onto our bookshelves at an affordable price. Handspindle spinning is a craft that is small and portable and can be exercised anywhere without intrusion. This book expertly demonstrates the charm of spinning with a handspindle - marvellous!
