Product Description

The step-by-step techniques featured in this richly illustrated book take the beginner who knows little about wirework on a journey to creating artistic and unique free-form jewellery. Using round wire that is readily available and economically viable, wireworkers learn everything from how to hold pliers to how to make ear wires, hook-and-eye closures, and cages for marbles and cabochons. Line drawings, photographs of finished objects, and a wirework gallery of pieces by the author and other contemporary wirework artists provide sample creations and ideas for the innovative wireworker.

About the Author

Mark Lareau is a wirework artist who teaches workshops around the country and at his bead shop, the Bead Factory. He lives in Tacoma, Washington.

As a beginner to making wirework jewellery and findings I found this book as good as having a teacher sitting at my elbow. It is very clear, very comprehensive in tools and techniques, well presented and very inspiring. I was itching to start straight away making all the great projects in the book. The gallery of work at the end is in good clear photographs and shows what can be aimed at. Mark Lareau is a generous teacher sharing his wealth of knowledge with the reader at a very modest price.

This book is good for the basics of wire wrapping. I like the style and some of the ideas are good (refreshing to see a slightly different cage for a marble, for example).

The gallery of pieces at the back are inspirational but sadly no instructions for them. It's interesting to see what can be done, though.

There's probably nothing here that can't be learned on-line, but it's worth looking at for people new to wire work.

Within an hour of sitting down with this book, a quantity of wire (20 gauge/0.8mm needed to copy the book to the letter), some wire cutters and a pair of round nosed and chain nose pliers I was hooked. By the end of my first day I could make perfect simple loops, by the end of the weekend I was making wrapped loops, wrapped wire bails and fancy headpins, and I have not stopped since.
The diagrams are crystal clear and if you literally follow the instructions to the letter you can't go wrong. I was delighted to find that something I thought would be so difficult was addictively rewarding. Gather the materials and give it a go for yourselves!
