2.0 out of 5 stars It's good for beginners..., 23 May 1999

On first look, the book is not bad. But when you go deeper, it seems to be a collection of personal experience from other users, and already published by Microsoft entries. I would rate it as an entry level book. The NT resouce kit has a better coverage of the registry.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing. A quick and dirty solution to the registry., 20 Mar 1999
By A Customer
I have just received this book and have thumbed through it. Very disappointing. This book consists of lists and lists of registry keys with a very brief description of what the key does, but nothing more. The layout is very poor, leaving it difficult to find what one is looking for. Practically nothing is said of the registry itself, how it is structured, where it can be found, how to edit it etc. At times it can be misleading. Consider for example the section on DHCP, here it is explained how DHCP can be switched on by remotely manipulating the registry. True, but what is not said is the entries which already exist for WINS, DNS, etc overwrite what comes from the DHCP server. All the entries on the TCP/IP protocol page have to be cleared before DHCP use becomes meaningful. It would not have taken too much space to mention this. The book gives the impression that it was banged together "quick and dirty". The corresponding web page reinforces this impression by being empty, the one link I tried didn't work any more.

If you want to hack the registry "quick and dirty", this is the book for you, otherwise look for something else.

3.0 out of 5 stars Keep looking..., 17 Mar 1998
By A Customer
Daniels takes a very "lazy" (IMHO) approach to documenting the regisrty. The author lists a large number of reg keys, a brief description of what the key does and occasionaly a list of possible settings. While there is some useful information here, the internal workings of the registry (.INF scripting and using programming to access the reg) are sorely missing. Also, some newer applications, notably Internet Explorer 4.x, are missing from the list of registry entries. If you want a list of hacks, this is your book. If you want to really *understand* the registry, look elsewhere.
