This is certainly not a book for people who which to learn this important RPG programming technique. The book starts with an example of RPG code almost on the first page, with little or no explination about the design, theory or function of sub-files. The examples given have no break down of syntax to aid the novice RPG programmer as to what the function of various commands do, and what components are required in order to generate and manipulate sub-files. After much effort, I gave up and took another book which gave me sufficient information (although that too was lacking in explination) that a working application with sub-files was generated. My overall concensus: very poor. The most useful part? The appendicies which show (albeit briefly) how to use screen design aid to define the display files required to use sub-files.

The book starts off with a sample subfile program with sample RPG coding. It then goes on to adding Windows. How do you do it? There is no sample coding to go along with it. This book was not written for someone "learning" subfiles. You would be better off getting out an IBM manual and saving the money.

Very practical, real life projects easy to read makes you think on your own, not retype code from the book. I have recommended this book to about six people and all of them loved it. RE to previous review You are probably in the dark about everything that concern computers, try learning DDS first and some basic RPG.
