4.0 out of 5 stars Not for those with a meagre interest, 24 Feb 2004
By Ms. R. E. C. Pressler "tinuviel23" (Yorkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is certainly not for those who believe archaeology encapsulates 'time team' or such other programmes interesting though they are.

Written as part of his thesis, Peter Akkermans executes the writings of the book well and gives insight into a little regarded subject - the archaeology of ancient turkey and Iraq.

In the core the book veers from the chalcolithic period or copper age to the later bronze age period. The main subjects, however to my personal disappointment were in fact agriculture and an understanding of the land - it explored different sites along the steppe and the foods cultivated such as emmer and einkorn wheat etc - and pottery.

The discussions in his work regarding the pottery however were in fact quite significant and were accompanied by numerous sketches.

The area of the book discussing the burials along the steppe was in fact disappointingly small and had none of the sort information or insight that Ian Hodder has of the neolithic period Catal Hoyuk.

Nonetheless, for those wishing to look into either pottery or agricultural areas for their dissertation, this book has much valuable material to offer.
