4.0 out of 5 stars Help for the "Smiled-on Addict", 29 Dec 2000
By Sensible Cat (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
Do you lose all sense of reason when you go into the shopping centre? Do you panic when credit card bills arrive? Do you hide those carrier bags from your partner to avoid a row? You may be suffering from the smiled-on, socially-sanctioned disease of compulsive shopping. This book will help you face the truth about your behaviour and make positive changes. It will show you how the ads manipulate you, how the false warmth and friendliness of the shopping mall or the telephone order staff on your favourite catalogue manipulate you into buying stuff you don't need and can't afford. Firmly, but compassionately, it will help you work out why you shop too much and better ways to fill your emptiness and your time.

You may not like the idea of filling out the pages of forms, but if you honestly apply the principles and techniques behind them you will learn a lot about yourself - in my case, how an unhappy childhood pushed me into a fear of intimacy which made it easier for me to spend Saturday afternoons buying luxuries for my kids than staying home to give them what they really wanted - my attention. But it isn't just psychobabble - this is an extremely practical book which will give you real strategies for getting back control of your finances - and why you lost it in the first place.
