Product Description

Review

Aimed at hardware and software designers, this book is a practical guide to the PCI Bus found in every modem PC. The guide begins with an overview of key PCI Bus concepts, including commands, read-and-write transfers, memory and I/O addressing, error handling, and interrupts. It then goes on to more advanced topics, such as PCI-to-PCI bridge architecture and the PCI BIOS. (One possible design application for the PCI Bus is for developing an interface card for controlling a robot from a PC.)

The accompanying CD-ROM includes a free, fully searchable eBook version of the text. In addition, a Web site for the book (www.pcidemystified) covers new PCI developments, offers supplemental materials, and provides a reader's forum.

PCI Bus Demystified Gets Down to Basics:
PCI is the mainstay for PC and many embedded-system designs, therefore designers need to be aware of its methods, mechanisms, and nuances. PCI Bus Demystified, written by Doug Abbott for LLH Technology Publishing, does this in enough technical detail to impress PCI interface designers and simply enough to enlighten engineers and programmers acquainted with the PCI bus from plugging in a few PCI adapters.

The book starts with a good overview of ISA and PCI and then dives into the bus protocol, along with optional and advanced features. The section on mechanical and electrical design will be handy for those dealing with motherboard or daughterboard designs, as well as those interested in all aspects of the PCI bus.

Standard and Compact PCI hardware is presented but the latest MiniPCI specification is not addressed. The latter is of interest to laptop designers and embedded designers that are space limited. Compact PCI is well addressed and probably the most important to embedded designers.

All aspects of PCI design and standards are examined, including hot-plug and hot-swap support, "plug and play" operation, and PCI BIOS support. Overall, the topics are presented well and useful for learning and reference purposes.
Bill Wong, Embedded Technologies/Software Editor, Electronic Design

4.0 out of 5 stars PCI Bus Demystified by Doug Abbott, 5 Feb 2002
By A Customer
PCI Bus Demystified is a great book for the whole range of experience. I've had experience of designing digital electronics but had very little knowledge of the PCI bus system. The book was easy enough for me to follow whilst going into the kind of detail experienced PCI designers would expect from a reference book.

The book covers all design aspects of PCI architecture, starting with a general overview of the PCI and ISA standards and then goes on to cover essential topics such as the bus protocol and mechanical and electrical design as well some more advanced information such as plug and play design and the PCI bios.

Overall I would say that this is a great book and is highly recommended to anyone interested in developing PCI hardware.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but incomplete, 9 Sep 2003
Whilst this book presents a good simplistic introduction to PCI systems that may be suitable for the student or casual reader it has some strange omissions which will leave the engineer reaching for the full specifications.

For instance the chapter on Electrical and Mechanical Issues omits entirely the mechanical dimensions of a board. Later on you get mechanical dimensions for compact PCI so why not standard PCI ?

The Plug and Play chapter may describe one mechanism for accessing configuration space on an Intel PC (not part of the specification they admit) but fails to even mention that a second PC mechanism exists. Potentially leaving some motherboard owners puzzled and alone.

Finally whilst the book comes with a potentially useful copy in PDF format on CD it should be acompanied with a warning that this is only usable via a Microsoft installer, so MAC and linux users can go fish.
