3.0 out of 5 stars The Long Home not too far from Provinces of Night, 1 Feb 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Long Home (Paperback)
Having recently read and greatly enjoyed Provinces of Night, I was keen to read more by William Gay. The Long Home has a similar sense of place, brooding woods and brooding boys. Between the books the narrative and characters feel like close family. However there are some arresting lyrical moments, and you can't help but care about Gay's brave young men, Winer and Bloodworth. The Long Home just doesn't feel as fully realised. I'd recommend leaving a long pause between reading them.

The comparison to Cormac McCarthy is too trite to repeat. Although the rich descriptions of lands well loved, and the human humane moments in it are memorable and poetic.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bold and angry book, 4 Oct 2009
By E. Shaw "Kokoschka's_cat" (Leeds, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Long Home (Paperback)
Set in rural Tennessee in the 1940s this has all the heated, rumbling thunder of Flannery O'Connor's American south stories. Written with insight and searing honesty, it concerns the death of one man and the near-destruction of his son by the wickedness of a vile and arrogant neighbour. This book has everything - steamy sex, violence and despair, delivered in vibrant language with a real depth of feeling.

Gay's descriptions of the land and the weather are original and evocative. Life is harsh in this bold and angry book and the writing is wonderful - distinctive and strong - unforgettable.
