5.0 out of 5 stars Rosacea is suspected to be a microbe under the skin, 4 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Paula Begoun is internationally recognised as the "Cosmetics Cop"and has sold over a million books on the subject of beauty as well as appearing on many USA television shows.

A beauty expert in her own right she is known for her relentless research and testing of beauty products so that she can then pass on the information to the consumer. Once the consumer has all of the information at their fingertips they are then able to make better informed judgements as to what are the best products for the money.

This book covers every beauty problem that you can think of from prevention of wrinkles to fighting acne and rosacea.

Apparently rosacea can resemble acne and that means that it is often misdiagnosed. According to Paula Begoun the treatments are actually entirely different. It is suspected that some kind of microbe under the skin is responsible for the symptoms of rosacea. This is certainly new information to me and I would assume many other women in the UK.

Paula Begoun says that killing off the microbe with prescription-only topical medications - which she lists - seems to help significantly.

The major chapters in this book are: Understanding the hype (why cosmetics companies can mislead); miracles, frauds and facts; skin care basics for everyone; sun sense; skin-care planning; skin care battle plans; battle plans for wrinkles; battle plans for dry skin; battle plans for blemishes; battle plans for wounds and scars; common skin disorders; hair removal; cosmetic surgery; men's skin care; baby skin care; body and nail care; makeup application step by step; problems and solutions (small lips, bleeding lipstick, bloodshot eyes; makeup colour selection for redheads etc, etc) and finally animal rights.

With this amount of information in it the term "Beauty Bible" does seem justified.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book. Everything you need to know about beauty, skincare, treatments and the cosmetics industry., 27 April 2007
I first discovered this book and 'Don't go to the cosmetics counter without me' when i was in Australia and ordered it for my sister back home. It is the BEST book i have ever read on skincare and beauty treatments. Very honest and informative. There are so many different skincare products out there, that all promise to work different miracles on our skin. Paula Begoun tells us the beauty myths and how she experinced, first hand the marketing ploys cosmetics companies use to encourage consumers to buy their products.

She tells us how expensive isn't always better and how it's the ingredients that matter, which are just the same in cheaper lines as the extremely expensive. There are some very interesting ones; one face cream that cost £95 used no more impressive ingredients than one at £5. It's the mis-leading marketing that's impressive NOT the cream!

I'd recommend this book to any women who uses skincare products or is interested in various treatments from laser to acne procedures. I have wised up to the marketing used by cosmetics companies and no longer listen to the skincare advisors who will basically tell you anything to get you to buy something from their range. I have saved a lot of money and have established a simple and more effective-than-ever skincare routine. I would also really recommend buying Paula Begoun's other book 'Don't go to the cosmetics counter without me' which gives a review of every skincare product and cosmetic from most of the lines out there. I never buy anything now, without referring to it first!
