Product Description

Product Description
For Mara, mother of four, sole provider for her family, life has never been easy. In a community that relies upon traditional magic to cure AIDS, and blames bad luck upon a bewitching curse, women carry a heavy burden as the world changes around them. But in modern Botswana, the tensions are growing as more and more young people adopt white ways and challenge the heavily divided structure of African society. For Mara, it is her children's dismissal of all the ancient magicks that have held families together for generations; for her son Stan it is the opportunities represented by his white teachers and the education system; and for daughter Mosa it is her burgeoning awareness of the inequality of her home, and community. Together they will develop new strengths and define new goals, enabling them all to triumph and travel 'far and beyon'.

About the Author
Unity Dow is the first woman in Botswana to be appointed High Court judge. Dow has a long record as a human rights attorney, co-founding the Women and Law in Southern Africa Research Project and is a member of International Women's Rights Watch an advocacy organisation. In 1995 Dow challenged the government over the 1982 Citizenship Act, under which Botswana women married to foreigners could not pass on their nationality to their children, though Botswana men married to foreigners could. This led to passage of a legislation that gave women the right to pass on their nationality to their children.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating insight into modern African life., 13 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Have you ever read a novel written by a female High Court Judge? Well, I hadn't until I read "Far and Beyon.'" Unity Dow is the first female High Court Judge in Botswana and has a distinguished history as a human rights attorney. It seems too much talent for one person that she can also write like a dream.

"Far and Beyon'" tells the story of Mara, a mother of four in a community that relies on magic to cure AIDS. But this is modern day Botswana in Southern Africa and more and more young people, including Mara's children Stan and Mosa, are challenging the old ways, especially the heavily divided structure of African society.

While Unity has written a political novel dealing with the frightening health issues and the position of women in modern Africa, she has also created a work of remarkable fiction that is not in the least didactic.

A contemporary novel which provides a fascinating insight into modern African life. Highly recommended for those readers who want depth as well as lyrically writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and inspiring by a woman writer., 20 April 2002
"Far and Beyon" is a classic book that should infact be recommended to be used by schools in order to get a more clearer picture of the current AIDS situation in Botswana. It is a well researched fiction that can help the communications area to improve its way of disseminating message (it is entertaining and educating at the same time), more especially in the culture that does not necessarily encourage communication between parents and children. As a student, it gave me a reason to look ahead, prepare for change and face challenges of life with a positive attitude. "Far and Beyon" is classic!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Filled with insights into the women's struggle in Botswana, 8 Mar 2002
This is a work brillantly executed. It would make a wonderful movie. Unity Dow has presented a story of a young girl in Botswana who questions the traditional customs, and the inferior roles assigned to women; yet she also sees much to cherish. Moreover, the male teachers consider it their prerogative to have sex with their teenage pupils. You will be introduced to memorable characters and a wonderful read. This is not a book that preaches. It tells a story well; yet the insights were richly bountiful to this human rights lawyer.
