Product Description

Product Description

This guide to the identification of all the birds so far recorded in Australia is designed for use in the field, to slip easily into a hip-pocket, backpack or glovebox. More than 750 species are described and illustrated with emphasis on easy comparison between similar species. The accompanying text details the different plumages of male and female birds, variations between adult and juvenile birds, and information on separate sub-species or races, together with their range, setting out the most helpful characteristics to watch out for. The guide also includes species distribution maps which enable the watcher to tell at a glance whether the particular bird is within its area, or is perhaps a rare visitor. In addition, the eggs of all the species that actually breed in Australia are illustrated with a concise description of the nest.

About the Author

Peter Slater has been interested in birds since early childhood and has studied nearly every Australian species in the field. He has wriiten or illustrated more than twenty books on Natural History. The paintings for this volume took about six years to complete, with superb detail and definition, each bird being carefully checked for colour accuracy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A handy book to take bush walking, 1 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This book covers all the birds of Australia with good bird drawings and maps showing where the birds are found, which really helps distinguish between similar birds. This book is compact enough to take in your bag or pocket when out and about-so you can identify birds in the city, country or anywhere!

i bought this book prior to my emigrating to Australia and for the price was not expecting such a well illustrated work, well what a pleasant surprise i got with all plates being very well drawn and easy to use. The book is a good size for field use. My father is a wildlife photographer & has informed me that he also has this book but an earlier edition. Excellent book all round and very well priced.

4.0 out of 5 stars Australian birds, 31 Aug 2009

Bought this book as a gift for my father who is travelling to Australia. He is really pleased with the illustrations and information provided, as he is a keen birdwatcher. The only downside is that it is quite a heavy book for a traveller.
