5.0 out of 5 stars An insightful look at insects and their roles in Nature, 2 Aug 2001
This book seems a little ahead of its time in some ways, although ecologists and research workers are now certainly favouring more advanced methods of agriculture, using natural enemies rather than pesticides. In a natural habitat, single plants are not badly infected. When plant species are grown in enormous quantities such as in agriculture, they are attacked by many insects, which multiply prolifically when presented with such a vast supply of its food.

The toxins used in some of these pesticides are potententially hazardous in the long term to all life, humans included. 'Of the myiad of insect species in the world, relatively few cause serious harm to humans.'

"We have planted parks, gardens and forests and through long-exploration and breeding, have created high-yield food plants delicious to our taste, and the numerous successes in breeding beautiful flowers for all to experience."

'Australian Insects - A Natural History' gives the reader something to think about, as this is a situation we have created and why we have turned to chemical control of pests and disease. More advanced agricultural methods are being investigated worldwide as there is a growing awareness that this is not the solution. A Nature Observer
