5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling story-Australian Aboriginal women, sacred sites, 25 Jul 2000
By A Customer
I have worked with Indigenous Peoples in Australia since 1976 and in particular with women on matters of land rights and law reform. Some of you might know my book Daughters of the Dreaming. However, the contesting in the media, university, courts and on the streets about the attempts of a group of Aboriginal women from the Ngarrindjeri nation in southeast Australia to protect a complex of sacred places which stood in the path of development is the most complex case I have ever encountered. I worked first as a consultant on the matter and then, having been drawn into the world of Ngarrindjeri women and men and seen the depths of their attachment to kin and country, I decided I wanted to know more and I wanted to find a form in which their stories might reach a larger audience. These are stories of survival in a hostile environment, of childen taken away to be raised in state-run homes, of religious beliefs in a powerful past when the land was created and of the responsibility of the living to care for that land and protect it from harm. These are stories of failed legal attempts to gain protection and of a Royal Commission which found the women, with whom I later worked, to have deliberately fabricated a relious tradition in order to thwart development. Having gone back to 19th century sources I am convinced they are not liars. The book contains their stories, in their voices, and each text has been negotiated with the "owner". Read about the writing of ethnography in the eye of a storm. Read about the lives of people who have maintained dignity, humour and local wisdom in the face of incredible odds. These are stories to enrich us all.
