Exellent fully formed philosophy of women in cyber culture, 12 Jul 1999

I expected hints and ideas, and got instead , a major world-view! This is an amazing piece of writing, and Spender is a literate, philosophical thinker. Especially good reading for teachers, grammarians, web surfers, gamers, women, academics and those who are studying English at university but can feel it slowly slipping out of date. This is one of those books that, even if you disagree, teaches you something about yourself, and leaves you thinking a little more deeply about the world around you.Spender illustrates a major shift in society, from a hierarchical 'print culture' to a more network-oriented 'information culture'. She demonstrates how society's fears of the internet, of computers, of 'geeks', and of 'dumbing down' of our young people all mirror almost exactly the moral panics of medieval monks when faced with the unthinkable, unspeakable horror of the printing press. It did them out of a livelihood, so they fought back - find out how the media, authors, and the establishment are using propaganda to fight back against YOU, HERE, NOW. Read it!
