4.0 out of 5 stars One of the few books on Scotland's drove roads, 4 Jul 2009

Slightly heavy read but one of the definitive books on the subject. The description of the routes makes lighter and very interesting reading (for those with an interest in ancient Scottish transport routes!). Disappointing was the black & white small route map early in the book (which was written ? half a century ago) - could the publishers consider an insert with a better map? Very well-bibliographed for those wishing to find out more detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars The real Scotlan, 27 Sep 2009
By Charles E. Mackay "charlese212" (Ecosse) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you want to know about the life and times of Scotland before the twentieth century I would highly recommend this book. It tells of the growth in trade between England and Scotland and the growth of the financial Scottish institutes all based on droving. There are no Jacobites, in fact the Jacobites have no place in it. We are presented with a class of people who are honest and hard working and upstanding whose only aim is to get their beasts to the tryst.
As you read it you can imagine the the roads and trails the cattle took and the characters encountered on the journey: he does not cover the mystery of the modern highland cattle but concentrates on the traditional breeds. It is well written and it is sourced well and was a landmark in research when it first came out. There should be a statue to Haldane and the publishers are to be congratulated on this fine reissue
