Product Description
Synopsis
This is an account of crofting life in Moidart in the north-west of Scotland, during World War II. The book describes the author's attempts to transform a deserted croft into a home. Although far from the Blitz, the effects of war were felt throughout the Highlands, and the rationing of food and vital materials, the battles with bureaucrats who had no understanding of a crofter's needs, and even the appearance of a Nazi mine off the coast, all frustrated Margaret Leigh's efforts. Before moving to Moidart, Leigh also published "Driftwood and Tangle" and "Harvest of the Moor".

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring stuff, 10 Sep 2006

A really good read. The synopsis above, in my opinion, overstresses the political and wartime aspects of the book when infact these are not really key features to it. Although, being when it was written ,wartime struggles and politics does play a part.
The book is an inspiring memoir of Margret's various struggles and difficulties in building up and runing her own croft in Smirisarry, on the west coast of Scotland.
She covers various aspects of twentieth century crofting life throughout the book and really paints a picture of what her life was like there. From contemplating the crops and animals, to the people in the comunity she really builds up the feel and mentality needed in crofting life.
Overall she manages to describe her time as a single female crofter in an interesting style without either overstressing the hardships of her life there or seeing it through rose tinted spectacles.
A very intersting read.
