Product Description

Synopsis
This is the detailed history of Norwich silver and goldsmiths from early medieval period to the closure of the Norwich Assay in 1702. Colin Ticktum, the accepted authority on Norwich silver, and himself a collector for over thirty years, has brought together his own archive and his access to both public and private collections as well as the work of other researchers, to produce a book which builds on that of the distinguished antiquarian Geoffrey Barrett published over 25 years ago. "Norwich Silver" will interest both the serious collector of silver and the avid reader of local history. Not only does it contain numerous images of existing pieces of silver, it shows how the craft fitted into the local economy and social structure. It also provides comprehensive details of the makers, including new identifications, a record of all the currently ascribed secular pieces, guidance on identification, styles marks and the most up to date information on the location of the Goldsmiths' Hall and therefore the first Assay, which opened in 1565. This is by far the most comprehensive review of an important area of heritage, which is of national significance, and demonstrates why Norwich was the second city in the Kingdom until 1700. "Norwich Silver" is certain to become the seminal work and standard reference book for years to come.
