Product Description

Review

'For those who remember his great exploits, and for those of us who had the good fortune to spend time with Tom, enjoying his effervescent company and admiring his tenacity as a rider, Chris Sidwells' Mr Tom will bring back memories of an irrepressible character, now sadly missed.' David Duffield, Eurosport 'All cyclists, and everyone who wants to know about modern sport, should read it. Here's a story of triumph, for this book is about Tom Simpson's life, not his tragic death. Brilliant.' Tim Hilton, Independent on Sunday

Product Description

An exhilarating account of our greatest cycling legend and one of the finest racing cyclist emanating from British roads told with unique insight by his nephew, Chris Sidwells. We travel from the cinder tracks of the industrial north-east to European glory, from the British club scene to a world championship and the yellow jersey in the Tour de France. An intimate portrait of an exceptional man, this biography tells us about the private as well as the public Simpson. Too often the Press refer to Tom Simpson's tragic death on the hot, barren slopes of the cruel Ventoux mountain, rather than his extraordinary feats as this most entertaining cyclist. This book redresses that balance.

5.0 out of 5 stars very readable & thought provoking, 16 Jan 2001

Having read this book I can whole heartedly agree with David Wilkinson's review. The photogragh taken just a few hours before Tom's death is haunting me as I write. The story is told in a factual manner leaving the reader to decide on the whole set up regarding drugs/teams/national & self interest in professional cycling at the time, although nothing appears to have changed now. 5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, an astonishing piece of work., 4 Mar 2001
For too long the memorial to Tom on Mont Ventoux has served to focus on Tom's death; now cycling fans like me who followed Tom's career with keen interest have a memorial to his life.
