Product Description

Book Jacket

The A-Z of Judo is the most comprehensive survey of traditional judo techniques ever produced. It presents, in easily accessible alphabetical form, almost every throw, hold, armlock and strangle which has a formal Japanese name.

To compile this authoritative volume, Syd Hoare, 7th Dan, has drawn on more than three decades of judo experience at the highest level, and an extensive knowledge of the Japanese language and Japanese judo literature.

He catalogues and describes more than 100 throwing techniques, 20 holds, 30 armlocks and 40 strangles. Also included are a further 20 techniques which, though now forbidden by modern judo rules for being too dangerous, were originally part of the combat systems as it emerged from its origins in Ju-jitsu.

Most of the techniques are clearly demonstrated by Olympic silver medallist Ray Stevens, one of the outstanding technicians of the 1992 Olympic Games.

For the judo enthusiast, Hoare also lists the Gokyo, the compilation of techniques made in the very early days of judo as well as the principle amendments made over the years in Japan. And, for intriguing contrast, he includes the list of techniques now recognised by the International Judo Federation.

By its very nature, The A-Z of Judo is of use and interest to both the beginner and the advanced judoka alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very helpful book for any Judoka, 25 Nov 2001
I bought this book recently and found it brilliant. I found useful pictures and information in this book that I haven't yet seen elsewhere. I found techniques both old and new (to me at least)and some favourites. Photos are great, very clear. The book includes several illegal techniques which are at the least interesting. I heartily recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars MMMMMMmmmmmmm Judo, 15 Dec 2003
If you ever wanted to know every technique there is, then this is the book for you. However, if you want to talk philosophy or history of judo then go elsewhere.
I just wanted to expand the arsenal of moves, and success!!
