Tracing the history of Grand Prix racing since the inaugural race was first held on a wartime airfield at Silverstone in 1950, this book examines how motor racing has evolved in spectacular fashion, developing from a minority sport followed by a dedicated few into the worldwide spectacle it is now. Although the book is broadly chronological, it does not describe every race ever run since the creation of the FIA Driver's World Championship, instead it captures the flavour of each period and identifies the trends and technical developments that characterise it. The history also includes a detailed results section.

No single volume could hope to cover in detail half a century of a sport as dynamic as Grand Prix motor racing and fortunately Henry doesn't try. This excellent history draws from the Autocourse archives and picks up the dominant themes throughout the first fifty championship seasons -- the rise and fall of the great constructors, the Cosworth hegemony, the turbo era right through to the modern day; the championns from Farina to Hakkinen and the cars and teams that have taken them to success; the coups and revolutions in the organisation of the sport; the constant quests for speed and safety and for the very control of the sport; the complex way in which all of these factors intertwine is exposed brilliantly by Henry, sometimes working with a masterly broad brush and occasionally focussing on particular incidents.If this book were unillustrated it would still be worthy of your consideration, but add to it the extensive resources of Autocourse's photographic archive and especially the work of the Cahiers and you really do get something special. Sure, avid Autocourse readers and collectors will have seen many of the pictures before but they harmonise with and sometimes counterpoint the text wonderfully.As ever with Autocourse publications, it's not cheap. And it still carries advertising, though this isn't as obtrusive as it sometimes is. But it's a labour of love and a work of art and no enthusiast should be without it.
