Yorkshire has long been known as "the most renowned of shires". Yet despite its reputation, and size, books on the county tend to concentrate on the Dales and Moors at the expense of the rest. "Yorkshire: A Portrait in Colour" gloriously redresses the balance, offering a photographic portrait of a county whose range of landscapes and rich historical heritage are without equal in England. Neither the Dales nor the North York Moors have been ignored - indeed the photographs of both are simply magnificent - but there are also mill towns, ports, the great industrial cities and the small fishing villages scattered down the coast. Few corners of the county have been forgotten, from the Vale of York and Pickering to the rolling chalk Wolds and the Boroughs of South Yorkshire. but there are also people as well as places, bringing plain-speaking down-to-earth Yorkshire vividly to life in more than 200 photographs that reflect its character and history. As Duncan Smith says in his introduction, it is ultimately the forthright spirit of the people of Yorkshire that unifies this vast county. And it is precisely this "spirit" that the photographer Trevor Croucher has captured so succesfully, in what must surely rank as some of the most stunning photographs ever taken of an English county.
