5.0 out of 5 stars Established as the new standard English translation, 8 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Replaces Yusuf Ali (The Islamic Foundation) as the standard English translation of the Qur'an. The translation is in clear modern English, as opposed to previous versions-including those published by Oxford and Penguin-which have adopted archaic Biblical English. The Qur'an is finally open to readers of English, both Muslim and non-Muslim. Far and away the best translation of the Qur'an in English available today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for English-speaking Muslims, but annoying and frustrating for curious non-believers, 4 Aug 2007
This is a lovely, easy to read translation in modern English. But I do have one major gripe. Several dozen key words have been left untranslated from the original Arabic. The translators didn't even see fit to use the English word "God" in the text. It's "Allah" all the way. Similarly, all the names of prophets are rendered in their Arabic versions despite the fact that 22 prophets mentioned by name in the Quran also appear in the Bible and therefore have readily recognised English-language versions of their names.

As for other less well known Islamic terminology, I'm sure that many non-Muslim readers will be left exasperated at the frequent interruptions of having to turn to the back of the book every few verses in order to check something in the glossary. "When is a translation not a translation?" When it's full of Arabic transliterations!

In fairness to the translators, in their introduction they state that their rendering is not aimed at a general readership but "intended primarily as a tool for English-speaking Muslims" whom they expect to be already familiar with key Quranic Arabic terminology widely used among Muslims throughout the world, whatever their native language.

The translators say that they have deliberately left such words and phrases untranslated as their "English equivalents have become so imbued with a meaning other than that intended by the original Arabic that to use them would be to mislead rather than to give the correct significance". They then cite several examples to prove their case. I accepted this as a valid argument and it somewhat diffused my previous annoyance.

So in conclusion, within the narowly defined parameters which the translators set themselves i.e. a translation for the benefit of a specifically Muslim readership, I believe that this is a fine easy-to-read translation and that they have succeeded admirably.

But what a missed opportunity! With a few simple tweeks they could have made the Quran easily accessible to a much wider readership, something which I consider very necessary for interfaith and intercultural understanding in the present geopolitical environment. I would urge the translators and their publishers to bring out a non-Muslim edition too with all names of prophets in English and Islamic terminology properly translated, if necessary using footnotes to provide elaborations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Modern and understandable, 14 Feb 2006
Good, simple to understand translation. I would still recommend Abdullah Yusufs work over this but this may be better for the younger generation to read from.
