Product Description

Synopsis

Nothing in Africa is as majestic and awe-inspiring as Kilimanjaro. This fabled mountain - Africa's tallest - which lies astride the Kenya-Tanzania border rises more than 19,000 feet, into a clear blue equatorial sky, its crown of snow and ice ever beckoning and alluring. A source of mystery from time immemorial, Kilimanjaro is the subject of many fables and legends and home to the Chagga and Maasai people, two of Africa's most colourful and fascinating communities - the one an industrious agricultural Bantu group, the other a Nilotic tribe of fierce and noble warriors and pastoralists. Their engrossing history and the captivating beauty of Kilimanjaro and its natural history are portrayed here in all their glory through the magnificent colour photography of David Pluth and Mohamed Amin while Graham Mercer's compelling and often lyrical narrative delves into the many secrets of The Great White Mountain, a spectacle that has attracted and fascinated diverse peoples down through the ages.

4.0 out of 5 stars A coffee table souvenir of a classic mountain challenge, 4 Dec 2007

A coffee table book but a magnificent one.

If you have climbed, or are plannning on climbing, Kilimanjaro and either want to show people what it is you plan on doing or want a souvenir of what you did then consider this.

It is a coffee table book, dedicated more to looking good than being great literature as is shown by the fact that the proof reading of the text could have been better. But as coffee table books go it does it's job very well. If you want to climb the mountain then this is in some ways a better way to illustrate what you want to do than the more practical guides, although it is those more practical guides such as Stedman's Kilimanjaro which you will really work from. If you have climbed the mountain and want a souvenir other than a photo of you six kilometers up then you will find little available to buy around the mountain so something like this is a real option.

Excellent photos, a very quick summary of the major routes and (proofreading aside) quite a good description of the flora, fauna and people of the mountain and arusha plains. This is not a practical book but if you're going there or have been there it is an excellent book.
