5.0 out of 5 stars JOURNEY THROUGH TANZANIA, 30 Sep 2009
By Dr. S. S. Nagi (united kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This large book was first published in 1984 (1988), has 191 pages, 1 full page colour map on page 10,and 148 colour pictures. In East Africa, Tanzania is the largest nation. It has Mt Kilimanjaro(Africa's Largest mountain, 19,340ft), Lake Tanganyika (longest and deepest lake), Lake Victoria (world's second largest lake), Ngorongoro Crater(world's largest Caldera),and mighty Selous and Serengeti National Parks. Kiswahili, the language of East Africa, was born here.
The book is divided into 7 chapters:-
(1)THE MAKING OF TANZANIA was done by many different races and religions. The Arabs were here first and the first European was Krapt in 1848. In 1890, the country became German East Africa and surrendered to Great Britain in 1918. On 9.12.1961, Tanganyika became an independent country. In 1964, Zanzibar joined to form Tanzania.
(2)THE GREEN TROPICAL ISLANDS of the coast are Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia. They produce the biggest supply of cloves in the world.
(3)THE SILVER COAST city of Dar-es-Salaam has one of the finest natural deep water harbours in the world. The makonde carvers display their ebony carvings.
(4)THE SOUTHERN SPLENDOUR is Selous, the largest and oldest Game Reserve in Africa, running through which is mighty Rufiji River. GIRAFFE IS TANZANIA'S NATIONAL EMBLEM. Ngozi Crater Lake is possibly 6 miles deep!
(5)TREK TO THE INTERIOR brings you to Dodoma, the new capital of Tanzania, 298 miles west of Dar-es-Salaam. Mwanza is the 3rd largest town in Tanzania.
(6)THE NORTHERN PARKS are haven for African wildlife. Serengeti (siringet)(1951),ENDLESS PLAINS, is the world's best known wildlife sanctuary. Ngorongoro Crater (Cold Place),(1959), is the 8th natural wonder of the world. Mankind probably originated in Oldupai Gorge. Lake Manyara and Tarangire national Parks are beautiful. Wildebeest Migration is the greatest show on Earth. Ol Donyio Lengai (Maasai mountain of GOD) erupted in 1966,1983 and 2007. At Arusha, Mt Meru magestically stands with Arusha National Park in its foothills.
(7) Mt KILIMANJARO (Mountain of Greatness) is a wonderous mountain, grand, magestic, 4 miles high and on clear day can be seen from 100 miles away.
This is a wonderful book, easy and a joy to read and watch those beautiful colour pictures. Other books from same authors on Africa are:-
(1) Journey Through Kenya, 1982 (2) Portraits of Kenya, 1995 (3) Railway across the Equator, 1986 (4) Last of the Maasai, 1987 (5) Run Rhino Run, 1982 (6) Ivory Crisis, 1983 (7) Portraits of Africa, 1983.
Having born in Kenya, I enjoyed reading this book.
Read and ENJOY.
