WINNER OF TES/NASEN BEST ACADEMIC BOOK AWARD 2002

Running on Empty is a fictional work about three teenage girls who have some eating problems. Anna Paterson, who runs a support Internet service, has drawn on her extensive experience to explore the different effects on each girl. She describes the difficulties they face as secrets are disclosed and treatment is embarked upon.

Anna's hope is that young people who suffer from an eating disorder anorexia, bulimia or bingeing will recognise the condition, feel safer talking to someone and that the stories will provide a means of support. It is also a useful book for peers who are free of eating difficulties but who can gain insight and compassion from the book. An essential teenage read.

This is Anna's third book about eating disorders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Non-triggering and a speedy read, 13 Dec 2002
This was a very clever book. It avoided any possible triggering to readers by never directly mentioning things like actual weights. But it was written in a sensitive and heartwarming way and I had real trouble putting it down. I really felt for all the characters and there were shocks as well as drama. A great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 8 Feb 2003
I now buy Anna Paterson's books as soon as they come out and this was no disappointment. Sharp, insightful and moving, it tells a story that only sufferers of eating disorders might otherwise know.

It looks into the world of food, addictions and the pressures of modern life with real sensitivity. I especially like the way it even tied in with 'Diet Of Despair'.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what an eating disorder really feels like or to anyone who wants to escape from one. Excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humane and truthful, 7 Nov 2002
Anna Paterson's latest book is an honest yet very engaging story of three girls and their battles with eating disorders. The warmth of their friendship and the realism with which their lives unfold rang very true for me.

I also learned what it felt like to experience different kinds of eating problems (some of which I have never really understood properly before). But best of all, this was a book that didn't patronise anyone. There were no simple solutions and no cheesy clear cut happy endings, which is what made the story so much more moving.

But ultimately the book is hopeful and lets the reader see that there is a way out of these problems (just not always an easy one). A very worthwhile and much needed book that will spread some real understanding.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointed ...
I had hoped for a story of more depth, considering the author is herself in recovery from an eating disorder. Maybe this is meant more for the pre-adolescent population. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars A Moving and Beautifully Written Book
I was drawn to this book by its unusually bleak cover. I found this book impossible to put down. It is a moving, beautifully written book and a very emotional read.
